In 1994, I began working with the Chrysler Manufacturing group to implement the principles of “Lean Manufacturing” throughout the Manufacturing organization. From 1994-2000, over 12,000 man hours of training were conducted to develop select individuals from each location on how to facilitate the shift in the culture. The most significant result was the development of the “Manufacturing Leadership Training” program, or MLT. This program was instituted throughout all ofDaimlerChrysler’s manufacturing locations including support groups such as finance and human resources. As a result, today DaimlerChrysler is considered by many to be the forerunner in the application of the principles of the Toyota Production System in a US bargaining unit environment.In 1999 I was reassigned from Manufacturing to the UAW-DaimlerChrysler health and safety group. This new assignment was to co-lead a project called Bringing Excellence to Safety Teams, or BEST. Under this letter agreement, the goal was to shift the culture at all UAW represented engineering, Mopar and Manufacturing locations to one where there would be “zero tolerance for injuries” and all employees would share in the goal to be the safest company to work for in the heavy industrial segment. During those seven years we moved the recordable injuries needle from 21 to 3. Responsible for supporting sales and implementation of Organizational Development interventions that focused on the performance improvement and leadership development. I was later assigned product manager of assessment and evaluation activities in support of client performance improvement and cultural change initiatives. Contributed to sales of $24m+ in sales over four year period.
