The most significant result was the development of the “Manufacturing Leadership Training” program, or MLT. This program was instituted throughout all ofDaimlerChrysler’s manufacturing locations including support groups such as finance and human resources. As a result, today DaimlerChrysler is considered by many to be the forerunner in the application of the principles of the Toyota Production System in a US bargaining unit environment.In 1999 I was reassigned from Manufacturing to the UAW-DaimlerChrysler health and safety group. This new assignment was to co-lead a project called Bringing Excellence to Safety Teams, or BEST. Under this letter agreement, the goal was to shift the culture at all UAW represented engineering, Mopar and Manufacturing locations to one where there would be “zero tolerance for injuries” and all employees would share in the goal to be the safest company to work for in the heavy industrial segment. During those seven years we moved the recordable injuries needle from 21 to 3.
