About Ronald Gertson

While I am a rice farmer by trade, my professional involvements include numerous water planning and water policy advisory positions. I am particularly keen on preserving rural water supplies in an effort to sustain agriculture, the environment and rural communities across our fair state. I am fortunate to be in a family partnership that has afforded me the necessary time to advocate for these goals.My goal in these various advocacy roles is to utilize science, logic and relationship-building combined with honesty and integrity in serving as an ambassador for rural Texas in ways that enable me to also be an ambassador for Christ.Specialties: regional water planning, agricultural water conservation, agricultural innovation, water policy development, consensus building.

    Mr. Gertson oversees agronomic inputs, varietal selection, water conservation, irrigation and wetland habitat for an 8000 acre farm in Wharton County. The farm irrigates 3000 acres of rice annually with 1/3 of irrigation water coming from groundwater and 2/3 from the Colorado River through an LCRA-owned canal system. Under Mr. Gertson's leadership the operation received the 2011 Blue Legacy Award for water conservation in agriculture.

    CWIC was formed in late 2009 in response to LCRA reactions to the 2009 drought. The group's goal is to advocate for fair treatment of the lower basin's irrigated agriculture in water policy and water project developments affecting the availability of Colorado River water. CWIC is funded entirely by contributions from interested parties. CWIC played a key role in the stakeholder process that led to the 2012 proposed LCRA Water Management Plan. Future projects include advocating for off-channel reservoirs that would reduce irrigated agriculture's dependency on stored water from the highland lakes.

    Mr.Gertson led the effort to create the Coastal Bend Groundwater Conservation District and has served as its Board Chair from inception to the present. The District shares management with neighboring Coastal Plains GCD and is instrumental in the leadership of Groundwater Management Area 15 overseeing the central portion of the Gulf Coast Aquifer.

    The Colorado/Lavaca BBASC is a stakeholder committee created by the Legislature through SB3 in 2007 for the purpose of developing stakeholder-based environmental flow regime recommendations for the Colorado and Lavaca River basins and bays. Mr. Gertson served as the initial chair of this group before resigning from the chairmanship in late 2010 to focus more time on the LCRA Water Management Plan development.
