Site Reliability Engineer, Bestbuy.Com
Richfield, Minnesota, Us
The Site Reliability Team specializes in monitoring and alerting on exceptional events in the BestBuy.com infrastructure and application. My role involved monitoring the performance of pages, tracking events that indicate an issue, investigating identified issues to the root cause, and working with the appropriate teams to get the issue resolved. My work involves many tools for analyzing performance and reliability including Gomez, TeaLeaf, Splunk, Omniture SiteCatalyst, and more. Some of the more complex issues require manual log analysis, and deep dives into the code base to find the source of an issue. Another part of my role was to work with development teams to ensure operational standards are being followed and when completing a story potentially conflicts with an operational priority, finding a technical solution that works for everyone. There was also a development piece to my role. My main task was to unlock the data that the site had hidden away for far too long. I got our Akamai performance data, our Gomez performance test data, and our Omniture business data into dashboards that we can consume at a glance, by utilizing each company’s respective data API. I have also exposed via Splunk a wealth of data that has been hidden away in obscure log files on obscure servers for years. I am a big proponent of unlocking data and making it easy to consume, better data drives better decisions.
