My professional interest has been always in data. After graduating in Econometrics / Operations Research and Computer Science I fulfilled several jobs and roles which were data and business oriented.My experience is that many organizations are not fully benefitting their data 'assets'. Next to that MS Excel (and other MS Office products) is very much in use but 95% of the users are only using 5% of the functionalities of this advanced platform. These were the major drivers to start Exceltise - Experts in Excel in 2006 (see below)Things I like in the projects:Data-oriented: Data plays a central role (either reporting, transferring or analyzing);Custom-made: Client's situation and requirements are leading; Microsoft platform is advanced and flexible to integrate different components into custom-made solution (vs selling standard software)Pragmatic: Solution is not the goal but just a tool helping the user achieving his goal (often based on familiar software already in use within the organization);One of my clients defined my role as 'Business programmer'. I often feel like a functional artist who creates an unique custom made tool crafted to optimally assist the user.Roles:1. Reporting specialist - setting up effective reportsDefining the questions and related indicators together with the client. How to optimally visualize the content and distribute among the users. Last but not least: defining audit checks and report to inform the users if any assumption is not valid2. Data-analist - delivering quantified answers to business issues (e.g. performing analysis)Sometimes a client is measuring a lot but can't make a clear consistent view. Before exploring the data it is important to define the indicators which are necessary to get a clear picture.
