Manager Of Environmental, Health, Safety, And Security

South Portland, Maine, United States

(Diodes purchased this facility from onsemi in June 2022)I thoroughly enjoy leading the team at our South Portland semiconductor wafer fabrication facility toward continuous improvement in environmental, health, safety, and security performance. I also enjoy serving as a member of the Diodes global Energy and Climate Initiatives Team where I collaborate with corporate executives and EHS leaders from Diodes facilities in other countries to identify and assess climate risks and formulate strategies to mitigate our climate impact and improve our environmental resiliency. I recently collaborated with engineers and technicians at our facility on initiatives that achieved a sustainable 8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing processes through process chemical substitutions while also reducing costs associated with the affected processes. I also recently modified our occupational medical surveillance program to improve service quality and employee satisfaction, reduce employee time off the job, and reduce program cost by 50%.

Director Of Environmental Health And Safety

Bath, Maine, United States

While at BIW, I provided EHS leadership and strategic direction to a shipyard of 6,500 employees who built destroyers for the U.S. Navy. I was honored to lead a team of 60 EHS professionals and technicians who were dedicated to protecting the health and safety of our employees and the environment.I provided leadership and collaborated with management and labor leaders to reduce the shipyard's internal Composite Safety Index (comprised of recordable and lost-time injury rates, and serious injury and fatality exposure rate) by over 10% in 2018, over 12% in 2019, and 10% in 2020 (expected). Specific actions and initiatives that led to these performance improvements included: Improved new-hire and on-going training and assessments that were designed to achieve safer employee work practices; Interventions to reduce specific injury trends including grinder injuries, hand injuries, and shocks; and Improved incident investigation methods to better identify and mitigate incident root causes.I Initiated and led an intervention that, within 12 months, achieved a 50% reduction in material handling incidents that had the potential to cause serious injuries and were causing significant damage to material. This effort clearly defined the material handling training curriculum to assure that necessary skills were being taught consistently. Robust skills assessment tools were implemented to assure that training methods were effective and that employees gained the skills that were taught.

2018 - 2020 ~2 yrs

Full-Time, At-Home Parent And Part-Time Consultant

I dedicated this period of my life to full-time parenting while remaining engaged in my EHS career through part-time consulting, service to my profession, and continuous professional development. My part-time consulting clients included UTC, The Hanover Insurance Group, St. Germain Collins, and Georgetown Pottery. During this period, I served on the boards of the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council and the American Industrial Hygiene Association – Down East Local Section. I also organized and presented at several environmental health and safety conferences and meetings, and obtained my Certified Safety Professional certification.

2006 - 2016 ~10 yrs

Principal Consultant

Falmouth, Maine

I founded and operated this profitable EHS consultancy and grew it to employ one full-time professional in addition to myself. It was typical for clients to come to me suspecting that they had some sort of health problem but didn’t know how to evaluate or fix it. I really enjoyed bringing peace of mind to my clients by helping them to understand the hazards to which their employees were exposed and then developing sustainable solutions that effectively protected their employees from these exposures.Key clients included UGL (United Gilsonite Laboratories), United States Navy, International Paper, Fraser Paper, LL Bean, Bath Iron Works, Pen Bay Medical Center, Quality Egg of New England, Auburn Manufacturing, and Maine Drilling and Blasting. Sample of projects included:- Contract EHS management and program development for a large agricultural client.- Development of a comprehensive occupational safety and health program for a start-up construction company.- Evaluation of employee exposures to a wide variety of chemical, physical, and biological health hazards and development controls to protect employees from those exposures.- Assessment of buildings for indoor air quality and mold problems and development solutions to mitigate these problems.

1997 - 2006 ~9 yrs

Manager Of Safety And Health Operations

Bath, Maine

Managed a team of up to 40 occupational safety and health professionals and technicians that protected 8,000 workers who built Aegis destroyers for the U.S. Navy.Key leader on a team that developed and implemented an extensive behavior-based safety program that reduced occupational injury and illness rates by 50% over a two-year period. This performance improvement resulted in a savings of over $20MM annually in direct, injury-related expenses. The program empowered employees to identify and mitigate safety risks, and included peer-to-peer safe behavior observations and coaching.Designed, developed, and implemented a Microsoft Access database to manage over 8,000 industrial hygiene exposure monitoring records. This system replaced the labor-intensive and error-prone paper-based system and greatly improved the ability to analyze data and take action to protect employee health. ROI was achieved in less than one year. This system was implemented in 1992, was still in use as of March 2023, and contains well over 10,000 records.Received an Aegis Excellence Award presented by the United States Navy and Bath Iron Works for, “superior performance in installing the port thrust bearing structural modification on Hulls 452 (DDG 54) and 453 (DDG 56).” Provided safety leadership for the safe, effective, and efficient execution of this major modification which was scheduled to be first installed on later hulls.
