Systems Engineer (Staff, Senior Staff, Advisory)

Amdahl Corporation

Sunnyvale, Ca

In 1981, after my two year assignment came to completion, I returned to the Amdahl Corporate Headquarters as a member of the Amdahl Customer Service Support Center. In addition to supporting the Field personnel and Amdahl Customers worldwide, I also participated in customer benchmarking which aided in finalizing sales. In mid-1981, I was selected to participate in the Second Generation of Amdahl Mainframe from the 470 to the 580. My involvement would become part of an elite support team of hardware and software experts which improved the product, successfully engineered fixes to hardware and firmware, and stabilized the platform. After close to 7 years of 580 product support worldwide, I moved into development of a platform for providing a central point for communication failure information back to analysis systems from multiple products within a customer’s data center. This included assisting Engineering with the design, participating with the 3rd party manufacturing company, and building a support team. The most significant accomplishment was complete stabilization of the platform, disbandment of the Engineering team, and eventual disbandment of the support team.My next venture was how to make the Amdahl Field force competitive in the market place. After several months of surveying the Amdahl Field, which included traveling to Europe, Canada, and various points in the U.S., I authored a plan to provide 21st century tools. The ultimate end result encompassed requirements from Amdahl Education, Amdahl Sales/Marketing, and Amdahl Customer Service. The plan called for a color laptop with remote communications capability. 2500 Laptops with supporting equipment was supplied to the Amdahl Field Force.
