I will take the liberty to use this place to share my professional philosophy: I wake up every morning and I choose to have a great day. I love building great products with great people and I love building great teams. I believe great teams are diverse and have balance. They have "good entropy": not too little or they'll collapse, not too much or they will explode. Composing diverse backgrounds and styles into a high-performing team is a real, interesting challenge.I also believe great teams can accomplish great things. I believe everyone in a great team should continuously strive to balance three dimensions: (1) do something you love; (2) do something with people you enjoy working with; and (3) do something that is important to your company. I call those three dimensions "the tripod". And I often say to the teams I work with that, at times, one of the legs of the tripod may become a bit wobbly: once in a while we end up working on a project or task we don't like as much. Or we work in a team that is not to our taste. Or even the project we're on may turn out not to be important for the company. That lack of balance will happen, that's certain - but it cannot last for too long. I believe it is each person's responsibility to try and balance the tripod back - don't just expect your manager to fix it for you!And speaking of expectations: I learned to grant trust to people, and expect them to make mistakes and learn from them. If you don't make mistakes, you're not going fast enough. If you repeat them, you are not learning. Run, fail fast and learn!
