As Chief Actuary for Old Mutual Insure, I am accountable for the design, development and leadership of the actuarial assurance framework for all of Old Mutual’s non-life business in South Africa. I am the appointed actuary (HAF) for three entities: a large diversified non-life insurer, a cell-captive insurer and a monoline trade credit insurer. As part of this role, I have responsibility for OMI’s climate change program and the corporate, second-line assurance and internal modelling teams and provide oversight and assurance on all actuarial areas in the companies. Key responsibilities include:• IFRS 17 implementation across OMI , overseeing ongoing statutory valuations and capital modeling, and managing improvements to streamline and automate processes.• Enhancing OMI's risk management capabilities by updating internal models to current best practices, optimizing capital allocations, developing fixed income investment strategies, and establishing robust governance.• Providing rigorous second line assurance reviews across OMI companies and captive manager, focusing detailed analyses on priority areas like specialty lines pricing, reinsurance programs, and aggregate exposure concentrations.• Building OMI's capabilities in climate analytics through developing in-house CAT models, collaborating with vendors, and quantifying climate impacts in risk assessments and capital planning.• Supporting actuarial talent growth by creating apprenticeships, driving university partnerships, and promoting OMI's employer brand at industry events and conferences.• Applying the latest actuarial techniques including machine learning to improve pricing, reserving, and modeling across the value chain.
