Mr. Szabat came to AACAP concurrent with formation of its affiliated 501c6 organization, the American Association of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He expanded the reach and effectiveness of AACAP's Capitol Hill lobbying and worked closely with key House and Senate members to enact comprehensive mental health reform, with an emphasis on early intervention and Federal funding focused on children with the most challenging needs.On the political front, Ron was a driving force in establishing AACAP-PAC, which came into being in September 2014. He and his team served as principal staff to AACAP-PAC's new Board.Among added responsibilities, Ron oversaw one-third of AACAP's 60 member-driven committees, covering many facets of clinical practice, practice management, government affairs, and judicial advocacy. Ron also was the principal policy and political advisor to AACAP's Delegation to AMA's House of Delegates.Additionally, Ron planned, directed, and executed AACAP's annual Legislative Conference, which welcomed and trained families, youth, and AACAP members to take lobbying messages to Capitol Hill. He is an artful and accomplished legislative attorney who expertly drafts, negotiates, and advances bill langauge to achieve principal public policy goals.Among other responsibilities, Ron was heavily involved in developing AACAP's strategic priorities and served as the lead staff on a Presidential Task Force on Integrated Care. He co-chaired the behavioral and mental health integration workgroup of the Primary Care Collaborative (PCC). Ron also was the principal staffer to AACAP's Resource Group on Youth at the Border.

As an Executive Vice President and the General Counsel for the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Ron Szabat functioned as the Society’s lead political strategist and chief legal counsel. He managed its Washington, DC, office and was responsible for all State and Federal advocacy, practice management, and corporate legal affairs. As a registered lobbyist, he advocated ASA’s policy positions on a targeted range of issues specific to anesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine before both Congress and the Administration. His duties also included major responsibility for ASA budgeting and strategic planning, and he was principal legal and policy advisor on all advocacy and strategic positioning matters to ASA's Executive Committee, Administrative Council, Board of Directors and House of Delegates. Mr. Szabat came to ASA in October 2004 as Director of Governmental and Legal Affairs. He was named General Counsel in Spring 2005 and was promoted to EVP in early 2007.
