About Ronald Buning
Computers, space science, and being a first responder (EMS/Police) are my lifelong passions and what gets me out of bed every morning. My early interest in computers played a huge part in my emergency medical role by motivating me to create a mobile data system for patients. I reasoned that if FedEx can track a box from point to point and provide its data online, we should be able to do the same with critically ill patients. That innovative thinking followed me in my role as a police Crime Analyst, and on into my extensive Information Technology career at NASA and beyond. Not only do I love technology, but I’m at my best when figuring out better ways that technology can serve and protect us.One of the most memorable career highlights of my 20-year career was being part of the information technology team for NASA’s Mars “Curiosity” Rover Mission. Having worked my way up through several engineering roles at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory starting with System Administrator, advancing to System Engineer, and promoting to EOS Data Center Manager, I collectively used all of my system engineering & administration, network communications, and data center-cloud skills to bring science data back from Mars to Earth. The project was a tremendous technical challenge, immensely satisfying, and checked all my boxes for career passion. Our team enabled billions of people to view and download Mars images in near real time resulting in several NASA Group Achievement Awards being awarded to my team. As a bonus, I was asked to join the JPL Speaker’s Bureau and became a NASA Solar System Ambassador tasked with sharing the wonders of space science with schools, museums, and service groups by doing in-person presentations, teaching programs in schools, and even appearing on science-focused TV shows.I am a Platform Engineer, with experience as a Director Of Information Technology, System Engineering, and Consultant providing extensive technical and managerial expertise in a variety of science, technical, retail, and government sectors. A Platform Engineer is a member of the technical staff and acts as a liaison between engineering, product development, customer support, and marketing. They make sure that products adhere to engineering specifications and follow the Company’s product pipeline and roadmap by validating vendor components, testing proposed products for performance and stability, as well as helping customer support with high-level technical problems.Ronald E. Data Center Manager - Jpl Data Systems Implementation And Operations Program (Dsio)
As primary Data Center Manager at NASA-JPL, I directed day-to-day operations for several high-performance data centers that receive, process, and archive multi-mission scientific data from orbiting spacecraft in near real-time.Data processing facilities at JPL come in two varieties. The first is a traditional data center that houses core business as well as mission-specific scientific processing systems. These systems use traditional commodity servers and typically do not have any specialized hardware requirements. The second type houses supercomputers and high-performance Linux-based compute clusters that ingest raw spacecraft data and then apply complex algorithms (i.e. Fourier transformations) to the data sets and then storing the final validated data product.
