Chief Counsel at American Oversight, a nonpartisan, nonprofit watchdog that advances truth, accountability, and democracy by enforcing the public's right to government records. We act where corruption and government power overlap. From the federal Freedom of Information Act to state transparency laws, we use carefully crafted records requests to extract information from the government — information they often don’t want the public to have. When the government fails to respond as required by law, our team has the legal expertise to take them to court and enforce the public’s right to hold our leaders accountable.Previously, I served for ten years as the Legal Director for Free Speech For People, where I litigated campaign finance, election protection, government accountability, and other constitutional democracy cases in courts across the United States. In 2022, I helped lead legal challenges to the constitutional eligibility for office of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Madison Cawthorn under section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment (the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause), and was co-trial counsel at the first section 3 trial in 150 years. I appeared on MSNBC and CNN to discuss this work, and I've published commentary or been quoted in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other national news publications. I regularly testified before state and local governments around the country, and I was lead author of The Constitution Demands It: The Case for the Impeachment of Donald Trump (2018).Before FSFP, I served as Assistant Regional Counsel in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s New England office, where I received the EPA’s National Gold Medal for Exceptional Service. I clerked for Judge Kermit Lipez of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Judge Douglas Woodlock of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Before law school, I worked at Microsoft and as a data consultant to nonprofits.I'm admitted to practice in Massachusetts, federal district courts in Massachusetts, Colorado, and D.C., the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth, Ninth, Eleventh, and D.C. Circuits, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
