After the acquisition of Network Security Wizards by Enterasys, I ran the IDS engineering team which produced the Dragon IDS. Product Management, Competitive Analysis, Quality Assurance, Documentation, Research and Engineering of software and hardware products reported to this group. I supported the development of Enterasys security strategy with other product lines. During this timeframe, the Dragon IDS was recognized by Gartner in the most upper-right corner of their Magic Quadrant for network intrusion detection.

Wrote the Dragon Intrusion Detection System which was the first commercial network IDS which natively supported command-line Linux, an open signature language, support for 100MB networks, on-demand packet capturing, detection of stealth port scanning and generic detection of buffer overflow attacks. Within 18 months of starting NSW, Dragon was deployed and in use at a variety of government agencies, ISPs, banks, universities and health care organizations. After receiving multiple offers for VC investment, OEM and acquisition, I ran a process for potential acquirers which resulted in a sale to Enterasys Networks.

Directed the operation of penetration testing and incident response for the first real "Cloud Computing" company of its kind. Reported to the executives on the overall state of security, including helping demonstrate compliance with a variety of requirements of a pre-IPO organization. Also participated in security awareness training, hiring experienced security employees, demonstrating to customers the security controls and monitoring in place and purchasing, deploying and operating cutting-edge intrusion detection and security assessment products and services.

Designed a variety of network security solutions for government customers and performed network security assessments for government and commercial customers. Helped design and deploy the first commercial network honeypot which simulated network targets and enabled learning of "hacker" techniques.

Performed network security assessments of civilian, military and intelligence networks to identify vulnerabilities. Communicated results with written reports and presentations. Performed vulnerability research enabling penetration testing teams to be successful demonstrating risk to various government customers. Helped train new security analysts and raise awareness of network security. Supported a variety of military training exercises which had "cyber" components to them.

As my first full time assignment with the United States Air Force, I worked at the Air Force's Command, Control, Communications and Computers Agency. As an engineer, I supported the design of a variety of communications and weather systems, some of which are sill in use today.
