Ron Hoffman PhD is an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Nipissing University, a position he commenced in August 2015. Previously, he was an instructor at the Ontario Police College where he was subject coordinator for mental health issues, coordinator of Basic Constable Training, Advanced Patrol Training, Coach Officer Training, and Crime Prevention Training courses. He was the project coordinator for the National Use of Force Framework and is recognized as an expert witness in the area of police response to persons with serious mental illness. Prior to the police college, he held various positions including police officer, probation and parole officer, and college teacher. He has co-authored an introductory criminology textbook, Criminology: The Core, and Not Just Another Call... a practical guide for the frontline officers for responding to persons with mental illness. His Master’s degree in psychology focused on the history of the care and treatment of persons with mental health disorders and his PhD thesis was devoted to the development and validation of the interRAI Brief Mental Health Screener (BMHS), an instrument designed to enhance the ability of frontline emergency responders identify persons with serious mental health disorders.
