About Ron Kraybill

Peacebuilding has energized me for 30+ years - in challenging diversities we meet the best and the most difficult aspects of being human. My current cutting edges include:- Peacebuilding as an aspect of crisis response. Regrettably, crisis management is increasingly the new "normal" in global reality as the toll from human irresponsibility mounts. The skills and processes of peacebuilding can contribute much here. - The interaction of conflicts "behind the table" (within each side) with conflicts "across the table". In major conflicts, behind the table dynamics contribute to the larger conflict more than most people recognize. How to work insightfully in these multiple conflicts? - The linkage of peacebuilding with decision-making. Non-consultative, non-transparent, non-accountable decisionmaking processes lie in the background of most conflicts, large and small, "across the table" for sure, but almost always "behind the table" as well. Thus much peacebuilding work involves setting up credible decisionmaking processes. Yet the link between peacebuilding and decisionmaking gets insufficient attention as a matter of conscious analysis, planning, and teaching among peacebuilding practitioners. - Strengthening abilities for dialogue and conflict resolution at all levels of conflicted societies. Civil society-based actors have to part of peace processes long-term, but often they are ignored.- The personal sustenance and transformation of peacebuilders. Burnout is a big issue for many in this field. As is "practicing what we preach" - peacebuilding organizations are among the most conflicted and turf-oriented organizations around. - Social media and web tools for peacebuilding purposes.

As a research project during my Masters of Divinity program at Harvard Divinity school, I proposed an experiment to the Juvenile Probation of Elkhart County, Indiana, and facilitated several cases of victim/offender encounter, the first in the United States. The cases turned out well and brought a positive response in the local judiciary. A new pilot program was established in Elkhart, the first program in restorative justice in the US, directed by Howard Zehr, now widely considered the “grandfather” of the restorative justice movement. These were the first Victim/Offender cases in the United States (however, credit for the concept goes to Dave Worth and Mark Jantzi, who established the first program in Kitchener, Ontario, in a pioneering initiative of Mennonite Central Committee.)
