The wireless industry has provided me the opportunity to participate in two related career paths, voice and data communications. Now the network is all about the data and the bandwidth to move it along. Seems like every month there is something new to replace what was new a few months ago. I enjoy reading about technology as well as having the opportunity to work with it. Whether it is experimenting with my amateur radio equipment reaching out to the far corners of the earth; building Linux LAMP servers; configuring Apache2 with MySQL databases with multiple tables; and interfacing MySQL with PHP, JAVA, and HTML, it is always something that brings a smile. In my professional life being able to learn and work on Cisco routers and switches has been rewarding. Working with BGP, STP, OSPF to route traffic, partitioning switches with VLANS to support multiple subnets is interesting. The wireless MSC (Mobile Switching Center) has changed substantially in its configuration. No longer just a means for two people to speak to each other. I’ve seen the intertwining of communications and information technologies; devices now get IP addresses, which allows users to cruise the internet from the palm of their hand. Being part of this continual change and growth as a technician, engineer, and manager is extremely rewarding. My goal is to broaden my knowledge of the expanding field of information technology; guiding and working with a team in a collaborative effort as a manager/team lead. To break from all the acronyms and chatter I spend time walking in the woods taking in the air and enjoying nature. When the weather is conducive for motorcycle riding I’ll get out and take a ride up into the mountains or to the ocean to take in the sites. Most of the time is spent relaxing with family, dogs, and friends.
