I volunteer my services at the local public access TV station as a producer/director. In addition, I help other producers with their projects. I specialize in public safety topics such as disaster preparedness, rural fire safety, how to perform hands-only CPR, and evacuation procedures. My production, "Be a Friend, Save a Friend" won the 2010 award for Instructional/Educational Programs at Community TV of Santa Cruz.

2-1-1 volunteers respond to the county Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during disasters. The 2-1-1 system is part of United Way and volunteers staffing the EOC provide the communications link between the Santa Cruz County EOC and the 2-1-1 call center in San Francisco. In addition to being a program volunteer, I'm co-editor of the training manual for volunteer staff.

I became a CERT volunteer when I produced a video program on the Community Emergency Response Team program for Community TV of Santa Cruz. The CERT program trains volunteers in the basics of first aid, control of utilities, fire suppression, and rescuing victims from collapsed structures. The CERT volunteers may be the first responders to major emergencies in their neighborhoods.
