I performed Product Assurance systems interoperability testing and managed the company’s lab in the Reno facility. My primary responsibility involved testing beta and released versions of Class II and Class III electronic gaming machine's (i.e. slot machines, EGMs,) operating systems. This included analysis of interoperability, functionality, and adherence to the Gaming Standard Association’s (GSA) Game To System (G2S) protocol and the Slot Accounting System (SAS) protocol. This involved careful evaluation of communication messages for compliance with the rules and conventions of those standards. My work included extensive use of Hewlett Packard’s Quality Center quality management software, RadBlue G2S protocol testing utilities, Sarena TeamTrack issue management system, Wireshark network protocol analyzer, Frontline Serialtest analyzer, and internally developed tools and utilities. I performed testing on-site as well as at third party locations such as International Game Technology, and Bally Technology in Nevada and New Jersey. In addition to my testing work, I performed all tasks related to keeping the test facility functional. I performed bare-metal builds of servers using Microsoft Server products and VMware Infrastructure for use in the execution of testing and analysis of the company’s products. This included building Class II Central Determination Systems for testing operability with other vendor’s systems. I installed and administered the department’s File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site for providing software availability to our team members and other company personnel. In managing the lab, I performed network setup and maintenance, system imaging an backup using Acronis backup software, desktop computer builds and updates, equipment inventory, cabling, magnetic stripe card equipment, EPROM device programming, EGM setup and maintenance, and myriad other tasks. I wrote the department’s Public Key Infrastructure testing environment installation document.

I started my tenure with WMS Industries in Product Assurance testing the company’s electronic gaming machines’ (EGM) operating system ability to effectively function with third-party vendor’s server-based gaming systems. My efforts were concentrated on-site at International Game Technology’s (IGT) Global Interoperability and Technology Center (GTIC) in Reno, Nevada. The interaction between the EGM and the IGT sbX™ server-based gaming system is conducted via the Gaming Standard Association’s (GSA) Game To System (G2S) communication protocol which was the focus of the analysis I performed. Defects in the WMS product’s operating system were entered in the Hewlett Packard Quality Center quality management system and verified in the Sarena TeamTrack issue management system. I worked closely with WMS Development and IGT staff in resolving issues discovered during the testing process. This work relied heavily on my previous experience with IGT systems and relationships with their staff.Additionally, my duties included managing all aspects of the guest testing lab that was provided by IGT to WMS at their facility. I maintained the EGM’s hardware and software in working order and built computers for testing tools and utilities. I also participated in management team meetings with IGT that discussed the progress of our projects and mapped future goals and objectives.

I began working at International Game Technology (IGT) as a trainer in their Advantage™ and EZ Pay™ systems and soon moved into Product Assurance engineering. In my engineering role, I worked extensively on the company’s sbX™ server-based gaming system. The sbX™ product was in its infancy when I began on the project and I was able to observe its development from conceptual renderings, partially functional dashboards, initial testable beta versions, to commercial releases of the system. Work on this project involved the “Agile” software development methodology and “scrum” meeting format with developers. My initial work on the product included test case development and execution in Hewlett Packard’s Quality Center quality management software. I then became my team’s primary system installation and configuration subject matter expert. I built bare-metal systems from releases with minimal time in order to meet the team’s testing schedule – often working very late after the software was released to product assurance so that the team could begin testing early the next day. I was very resourceful in working with the company’s Information Technology staff and other departments in order to re-purpose idle server and network hardware into our labs to meet ever-expanding test system needs. New engineers were trained by me to perform system installations, some of whom still work at IGT.
I owned and operated a sign business specializing in interior casino signs for electronic gaming machines (i.e. slot machines). This work allowed me to learn and perform a very wide variety of functions. From handling office management tasks such as accounts payable and accounts receivable, sales and marketing, product design and engineering, CAD/CAM, vinyl application, welding, electrical, neon installation, sheet metal, computer setup and maintenance, EPROM programming, to countless other tasks. I built and sold displays to, casinos in the northern Nevada and California area. My focus was on smaller standardized sign that were more economical than my competitors were offering. I also refurbished my customer’s existing displays and held an inventory of ones I rebuilt to suit their needs. Additionally, I sold used progressive jackpot displays and controllers for use in the signs I offered to my clients. This experience allowed me to utilize all of my various talents and to become more involved the engineering aspect of business.

I entered the gaming industry as an estimator evaluating designs and calculating prices for the signs to be manufactured. In order to effectively learn how to develop the cost that the displays required to be built, I trained in all of the various departments involved in the manufacturing process. I cut Plexiglas, applied vinyl, and finished the sign faces with trim-cap. I built sheet metal sign cabinets from scratch with paint-grip stock and installed iron framing. From there the cabinets were laminated with polished brass anodized aluminum and had illumination lighting mounted inside. Outer treatments included various neon tubing and low-voltage flashing perimeter lighting. Then progressive jackpot displays were added with their peripheral components. The signs that were made by Mikohn required significantly more carful craftsmanship than typical outdoor electric signs. This was primarily due to the fact that the displays were viewed at virtually eye-level, and so the quality of the manufacture and detail had to be very high. Additionally, since the signs were quite costly, comparison to outdoor ones, the casino clients demanded superb characteristics.I was promoted to the company’s Installation and Service Manager a capacity which made me responsible for approximately thirty employees. I managed installations domestically and internationally as well as service functions. I devised and implemented a time tracking system to capture and account for the work effort being performed by my employees. Other responsibilities included product crating, shipping and delivery functions.
