In my tour of duty in the Navy JAGC, I served primarily as a criminal defense counsel at the Naval Legal Service Office at Treasure Island, San Francisco, finishing my tour of duty as the Senior Defense Counsel. Admitted to the US Military Court of Appeals. Tried and won a case of first impression for the US Navy in 1988, only the second of its kind in the US Military, defending a sailor who was HIV positive, charged with assault and battery, intent to commit grievous bodily injury, arising out of his status as HIV positive. The sailor was acquitted. I was recommended for early promotion and received the Navy Achievement Medal for my services.
