Ron Ross is a computer scientist and Fellow at NIST. His focus areas include computer and information security, systems security engineering, trustworthy computing, cyber resilience, security assurance, security architecture, privacy, and risk management. He has authored numerous security standards and guidelines that are widely used by federal, state, tribal, and local governments as well as the private sector.Dr. Ross currently leads the Systems Security Engineering Project which includes the development of standards and guidelines for the federal government, contractors, and U.S. critical infrastructure. He supports the U.S. State Department in its international outreach program for cyber security and critical infrastructure protection. Dr. Ross previously served as Project Leader for the Joint Task Force, an interagency group that includes the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, and NIST. He also served as the FISMA Implementation Project Leader and Director of the National Information Assurance Partnership, a joint activity with the National Security Agency. Prior to joining NIST, Dr. Ross served in many leadership and technical positions during his twenty-year military career, including assignments as a White House aide, aide-de-camp to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Okinawa, and senior advisor to the Department of the Army.Dr. Ross has been inducted into the International Cyber Security Hall of Fame and is a five-time recipient of the Federal 100 award for his leadership and technical contributions to critical computer security projects. He is a recipient of the Presidential Rank Award and the Department of Commerce Gold and Silver Medal Awards. Dr. Ross has been inducted into the Information Systems Security Association Hall of Fame and received its highest honor of Distinguished Fellow. He is also the recipient of the Service to America Medal for Homeland Security and Law Enforcement and the Michael V. Hayden Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the field of cybersecurity. In recognition of his executive leadership, Dr. Ross was selected as the U.S. Government Executive of the year. During his military service, he received the Defense Superior Service Medal and the NSA Scientific Achievement Award.Dr. Ross holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School specializing in artificial intelligence and robotics.The opinions in my LinkedIn posts are my own.
