Ron Turner is the CTO and co-founder of XpressRules® LLC, a company dedicated to tools for “business user enablement” and specializing in information access control. As a natural language linguist as well as a programming language expert, he comfortably inhabits both the human and machine domains. His two-fold career goal is to empower a human (1) to articulate—in his/her own language—directives to be enforced by a computer as well as (2) to automate those directives without any programming knowledge.Using a linguistics approach, XpressRules Studio directly confronts the large and growing Elephant In The Room for policy-based access control (PBAC): 1. How can a business user—a "civilian" without programming knowledge and without relying on IT—write computer-ready access policies? 2. How can those policies—written with the BU’s natural language (including local vocabulary)—become computer-executable within seconds (not days or weeks)?3. How can a policy manager—without relying on a vendor—reconfigure the entire policy-authoring environment in less than a minute?4. How does the policy manager responsibly govern access policies in an internet of things (IoT), in which machines—not humans—alter policies in real time automatically, beyond the capability of human authors?XpressRules' AI-enhanced technology anticipates the emerging security workplace in which business users exert direct governance over the life cycle of their info access policies.
