About Roo Jackson

As a graduate of Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, hard work and passion are terms I am accustomed to. In the pursuit of obtaining my B.S at Colorado State University, I received the University Honors distinction and was on the Dean's List all 4 years- all while being heavily involved in my community. I merged my love of botany with my passion for social justice in my undergraduate career and am currently practicing this union at Duke. I believe there is more to this field than just the aspect of science. The social component is just as, if not more, important in this predominantly white field. Everyone has the right to live on healthy land. It is my goal to make sure the voices of underrepresented communities are heard as I continue to fight environmental injustices.

  • The Nature Conservancy
    Conservation Equity Fellow
The Nature Conservancy May 2023 - Aug 2023
    Durham, North Carolina, United States
I analyzed demographic data with GIS and R-Studio to see who occupied land owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and felt an impact from implemented conservation strategies. This work aimed to see the majority demographic of people living on TNC-owned land as well as surrounding communities TNC is hoping to focus on as the climate continues to change and threaten vulnerable populations. Are all community members' needs being considered when conservation work occurs? Is TNC entering a parcel of land dominated by those who have been traditionally disenfranchised? After focusing on only ecological factors when considering restoration work, these community-based questions are revolutionizing today's world of environmental management. My work in this position set the groundwork for the future of how TNC undergoes conservation and ensures environmental justice is upheld throughout all of North Carolina.
