My main responsibility is to direct production on a shop floor level to reach monthly and annual production volume targets. I worked under the title Production Manager Trainee and eventually served as interim production manager. My primary area of responsibility was the entire secondary process (packaging and despatch) but I was also involved with the primary process (slaughter and cut-up) to some extent. This job included:- Managing six Production Supervisors and four Process Supervisors (and their substitutes during the summer)- Over 150 indirect subordinates- Overseeing production and responding to situations that required managerial participation- Daily reporting of my area's key performance indicators to Plant Director- Launching a pilot program that redefined KPI's on one packaging line to display our strengths and development needs more accurately- Participating in planning new products and evaluating how well they fit our production and giving cost estimates- Participating in production and maintenance planning- Overall cooperation with all other departmentsMy three most valuable lessons from this job were:1. I worked as one of the two packaging department supervisors for around 70 production workers in total. Our production scale was measured in the hundreds of thousands of retail packages every week, with dozens of products ranging from bulk volume products to handmade products. This job included:- Basic supervisor duties such as shift planning and checking hours- Ensuring efficient use of human resources during the shift- Correctly directing raw material flows and keeping track of on-the-ground buffer storage- Keeping track of safety and ensuring safety protocols are followed, providing first aid when necessary- Working on packaging lines personally when beneficial for overall production- Participating in production planning in regards of available human resources- Cooperation with HR department regarding employee well-being- Cooperation with other departments such as quality, maintenance and other production areasMy three most valuable lessons from this job were:1. First ever experience in a supervisory role; valuable lessons in every day leadership such as how to give and receive useful feedback, or how to motivate and encourage employees to perform better. Also learned to deal with less positive situations like arguments between employees.2. Basic understanding of working life legislation and the working dynamic between employer and employee parties.3. 100% ownership; I felt a deep responsibility in taking ownership of the department. I did not hesitate to put myself on the line when needed. You could often find me (especially during evening shifts) on some packaging line helping the operators.
