Rory Hutton is an artist and designer who has worked collaboratively with some of the UK’s most prestigious arts, heritage and cultural organisations. Inspired by history, art, architecture, theatre, opera and dance, Rory lends classic themes a contemporary edge with his distinctive lino print illustrations and vivid use of colour. His designs are most elegantly displayed through his highly coveted collections of luxury silk scarves. Created by Rory in his Cambridge studio each element is hand carved before being digitally printed onto silk by artisans in Italy. The handcrafted quality of the prints is of particular importance to Rory who is greatly influenced by the working methods of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement – “I enjoy the idiosyncrasies of the handmade, and lino prints have a charm and liveliness that really appeals to me.” The designer is all about telling stories through his prints, interpreting heritage for contemporary audiences – “My aim is to design scarves that will be treasured by their owners and become heirlooms of the future.”Rory regularly collaborates with The British Museum, The Royal Opera House, The Wallace Collection, The Royal Collection, Art Fund, Westminster Abbey and the Noel Coward Archive and is currently engaged on commissions for the V&A, Compton Verney and The Burrell Collection.Rory’s prints can be licensed for use on other products and have been seen on everything from stationary to soap packaging.
