Rory Dickens, Founder of the Sustainable Design Studio and Recycle Rebuild started his career as an Architect designing sustainable buildings with local communities in Malaysia. This first hand experience of using design to tackle issues key like climate change, loss of traditional values, and rural to urban migration was the foundation that helped Rory explore the possibilities of using design for good and its broad potential. In pursuit of further experience, Rory began working in Disaster Response, designing, managing and building Schools, Homes and various other structures in 8 different countries and disaster zones. Including Floods, Hurricanes, and Earthquakes. Whilst helping affected communities he was constantly aware of the plastic waste issues that were common across these communities.Determined to help these often poor communities to deal with their plastic waste problem, he established a non-profit organisation (Recycle Rebuild) to see if design could be used to provide a solution.Recycle Rebuild then began working to employ and train members of the community to help them create up to 100% recycled waste products. These products were then sold at an affordable price and the profits reinvested into the newly-formed micro-enterprise, creating a self-sustaining business that can grow to meet the wider demands of the region in the long term.Over the past few years of running Recycle Rebuild various recycling projects have been established, which have brought employment and sustainable waste management to many communities. As news of our work spread we have also been approached by a number of businesses and organisations in need of similar solutions that didn’t meet our charitable goals. More businesses than ever are seeing the benefits of circular economic models and are in need of equipment and expertise to help make their businesses more sustainable. Recycle Rebuild continues to be a non-profit organisation, we have created a small business (Sustainable Design Studio.) to address the needs of businesses and social entrepreneurs.As much as Recycle Rebuild helps provide a solution to help remove the masses of plastic waste being dumped across the world. We need to work to stop the source of the waste. We would like to revolutionise the way we manufacture and recycle goods in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment and turn waste into something useful. We believe encouraging businesses and start-ups to take up circular models is the start of this.
