Graduate Student

San Francisco Bay Area

As a PhD student in Dr. Anita Sil's lab, I studied the mechanisms by which Histoplasma capsulatum (Hc), a human fungal pathogen, was able to subvert host cell biology in order to infect, replicate and lyse resident host immune cells like macrophages. In particular my focus was on understanding how a family of secreted effectors functioned to promote host cell death. I discovered that Hc used this family of secreted effectors to promote host cell death in bone marrow derived macrophages and in mice. This work greatly expanded our understanding of how Hc promotes host cell death.

Jun 2015 - Mar 2023

Laboratory Research Assistant

San Francisco Bay Area

As a research assistant I continued with my undergraduate project in Dr. David Weisblat's lab. I further explored the role of putative mechansensory transduction genes in the body segment development of the leech, Helobdella austinesis. My research involved micro-injections of fluorescent tracers into individual cells, in-situ hybridizations, and confocal microscopy to determine transcript localization during embryogenesis.

Jun 2014 - Jun 2015

Marc Scholar

San Francisco Bay Area

As a Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) scholar, I conducted independent research in Dr. Weisblat's lab. I designed experiments to explore the role of putative mechansensory transduction genes in the body segment development of the leech, Helobdella austinesis. My research involved microinjections of fluorescent tracers into individual cells, in situ hybridizations, and confocal microscopy to determine transcript localization during embryogenesis.

Jul 2012 - Jun 2014

Undergraduate Researcher

San Francisco Bay Area

As an undergraduate volunteer in Dr. David Weisblat's lab I conducted research that further explored how behavior of the leech, Hirudo verbana, could be modulated by different chemical stimulants. I was able to induce a repulsive and attractive response from the leech depending on the presence of certain chemicals and was able to further determine the minimum threshold concentration needed to induce such behaviors.

Oct 2011 - Jun 2012

Pre-Imsd Research Scholar

San Francisco Bay Area

As a Pre-Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (Pre-IMSD) Scholar I conducted independent research in Dr. David Weisblat's lab. My project explored how chemical attractants and repellents altered the behavioral responses for the leech, Hirudo verbana. I developed behavioral assays in order to test the behavioral responses of the leech when exposed to different chemical stimulants.

Jun 2011 - Sep 2011

Summer Research Student

Greater Seattle Area

As a summer undergraduate researcher I conducted research in Dr. Gail Jarvik's lab at the University of Washington, Division of Medical Genetics. I studied the association of a SNP in SCN4A gene that was observed in patients with below average height. I used statistical and computational analysis to determine the correlation between height and SNP prevalence.
