20 plus years in the Enforcement of California State Labor LawsMy journey at the Labor Commissioner's Office started in the year 2000 with a triggering event. Prior to my employment with the State, I was asked by a group of workers if I could review their issued check stubs. It was quite interesting that an employer would issue an incomplete check stub to a worker while classifying them as a vendor. So, this inquiring mind picked up the phone and asked some questions about those check stubs. Subsequent to the conversation, those group of workers finally received check stubs with the appropriately named employer including all of the required wage statement items as required by the California Labor Code.Working for the Labor Commissioner's Office has been an exciting and fulfilling time of my life. I learned many skills that have enhanced my personal development and skills in all of the positions held. Holding administrative hearings, mediating claims, working with unions, and meeting with employers and employees was most fulfilling. I recall a particular time when I had to mediate claims involving 50 Defendants and 40 Plaintiff's in one day. Although it was challenging, the cases had a satisfying resolution. The key to this success is attributed to giving employers and employees the opportunity to ask questions so they could be educated in California regulations. Giving time to hear both sides and providing best practice solutions and answers promotes for the well-being of society.I see the future and it looks bright. Transitioning from public service to the private industry or a volunteer opportunity of a lifetime gives me a sense of expanding my horizons and passions. I recently joined an online career coaching workshop spearheaded by some amazing purpose driven individuals at Saddleback. I look forward to developing my knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve and grow in my quest for future opportunities.
