Blogger ➤ Critical Thinker ✦ Social Media ✦ Facebook ✦ TwitterRosa'S Reality Check May 2010 - Feb 2014Houston, Texas AreaDuring times of relative quiet in my project development, particularly when my children were smaller, I took some time for personal development and reflection. I also used the opportunity to hone my social media skills. In an ongoing project borne purely from a love of country and truth, I write about issues affecting our country in a no-nonsense, easy-to-read, entertaining blog that uses historical precedent and realistic debunking of the rhetoric we hear today. I share my musings, thoughts, and historical research on my personal blog site, as well as on my Facebook page, Twitter account, and on a group blog site run by some of the brightest minds in the nation, Order of Ephors. With stats of about 10,000 readers a month with minimal effort, I'd say social media is a great way to promote a personal brand. More information upon request.

Independent Contractor ➤ Project Developer ✦ Bilingual Professional Writing ✦ Financial ProjectionSelf-Employed Jun 2001 - Apr 2011VariousFor a decade, I helped companies launch projects in Latin America mainly by bringing down the language barrier between the parties involved. I created, edited, and translated business and technical documents for agricultural, energy, aquaculture, real estate, and technology projects, to name just a few. I also served as interpreter between English and Spanish speaking partners, and government officials often in real-time conversation. I have interpreted many times between project owners/collaborators and current and former presidents of Nicaragua and El Salvador. In this capacity, I have acted as liaison between investors and government. I managed PR and Marketing, often communicating with customers and media outlets simultaneously in both English and Spanish. When social media became an important tool in business success, I learned to optimize its use in customer relations in both English and Spanish. It is now an integral part of my skill set, used in every branding and customer relations effort. More information and work samples upon request.

Professor Of Aquaculture Engineering ➤ Mentor ✦ PioneerUniversidad Centroamericana Jul 2001 - Dec 2001Managua, NicaraguaUniversidad Centroamericana (UCA) is a premier education center in Managua, Nicaragua. Founded by the Jesuit Order as a non-profit private university in 1960, it was the first private university in Central America, dedicated to public service and Christian inspiration. After working in Nicaragua for 3 years in the shrimp farming industry, I realized just how underutilized the country's rich natural resources truly are. Lack of education, of course, contributes greatly to this problem, so it was exciting when I was presented with this opportunity. I taught a one-semester course, Site Selection and Basic Design, in Spanish at UCA university in Managua, Nicaragua to help them kick start their new major, Aquaculture Engineering. I brought in various guest speakers from the industry to spark interest and took students on trips to various sites across the country to analyze their suitability for aquaculture facilities. I started out with 17 students and helped the university recruit over 50 new students for the following year.More information available upon request.

Director Of Aquaculture ➤ Hatchery And Pond Design ✦ Vendor Management ✦ Financial PlanningCorporación Santa Rosa Jun 1998 - Jun 2001Estero Real, NicaraguaCorporación Santa Rosa was a company based in Managua, Nicaragua that operated semi-intensive shrimp farms in the north of Nicaragua, on the estuary near the Gulf of Fonseca. The shrimp were harvested 2-3 times per year, transported to a processing plant in Managua, frozen, and exported to the United States. I was tasked with transforming the semi-intensive shrimp farm of nearly 100 hectares (about 250 acres) into a Belize-style zero-exchange high density operation, to mitigate and control the then-recent epidemic of White Spot disease. I personally took control of post-larvae selection from Panamanian and Colombian vendors and designed and built a recirculating indoor nursery for quarantine. I then held intense on-site training for the staff in disease recognition and treatment. I had a new laboratory constructed and wrote guidelines for its operation, in English and Spanish, following Dr. Donald Lightner's course in peneaid shrimp disease at the University of Arizona in Tucson. I brought in a head biologist initially from the USA to train the laboratory staff and oversee the new security protocols. I produced financial projections, in English and Spanish, for the project and its expected results.Even before the final transformation of the ponds had been completed, shrimp production had tripled in the first six months after the project began, due to our success in controlling disease and preventing die-outs. This experience was instrumental for me in learning to communicate in Spanish on a very technical level, provide training in both English and Spanish, and also in translating technical and financial documents for managers in-country and English-speaking investors. I learned business terminology that I had previously known only in English, as well as technical terms, often switching back and forth simultaneously between languages.More information available upon request.

General Manager ➤ Financial Planning ✦ Vendor Management ✦ Government LiaisonMariscos Cuatro Estaciones Jun 1998 - Jun 2001Managua, NicaraguaMariscos Cuatro Estaciones is a seafood processing company located in Managua, Nicaragua. The processing arm and sister company to Corporación Santa Rosa, the plant was capable of freezing approximately 15,000 lb. of seafood daily. We received both wild-caught and farm-raised fish and shrimp, processed the product in a variety of forms, and finished by flash-freezing the product for export to the United States and Europe. We sold a small percentage of the product locally. As general manager, I oversaw the delivery of harvests from our shrimp farms to the processing plant in Managua, Nicaragua. I also supervised deliveries of wild caught seafood to plant. I managed all aspects of the process, from reception and inspection, to freezing, loading, and export to the USA. In 2000, I wrote and implemented, in English and Spanish, the first ever HACCP quality control plan for seafood to be accepted by the USDA from Nicaragua. I acted as liaison between the plant and the Ministry of the Environment (MARENA), writing our environmental impact study in Spanish to maintain our in-country licensing. I also reorganized the hopelessly confused internal accounting system to properly allocate plant revenue and expenses. With a new accounting system and newly trained accounting staff, we managed to reduce overhead by 25%.As in Santa Rosa, this experience helped me to hone my communication skills in Spanish, especially in the business and technical arenas. I learned new terminology and financial conventions, and dealt with vendors, suppliers, managers, colleagues, and investors in both English and Spanish, often simultaneously. Communicating with government entities in both the United States and Latin America also helped me develop skills in legal terminology. Additional information upon request.

Aquaculture Research Assistant ➤ Department Of Biological Engineering ✦ Excel SpreadsheetsCornell University Aug 1997 - May 1998Ithaca, New York AreaCornell is the Land Grant University of the State of New York and one of the Ivy League schools. The Biological and Environmental Engineering Department (BEE) serves three integrated functions: teaching of undergraduate and graduate students; research on problems in biology and the environment; and public outreach to help society implement new knowledge. During my junior and senior years in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering program at Cornell, I assisted with recirculating aquaculture technology research. In my research, I experimented with and documented the "gonadal squash method" for identifying gender of young tilapia fingerlings. In addition, I designed and formatted an Excel workbook for the data tracking chapter in the first edition of the now-widely used textbook "Recirculating Aquaculture Systems" by Michael B. Timmons et al.This experience introduced me to the world of aquaculture, which would later launch my career in many other ways. It was also my first exposure to technical and business writing.More information is available upon request.
