Over the last 13 years, I have garnered a highly accomplished scientific record of contributions the knowledge of innate immune response in four critical areas, leprosy, malaria, gonorrhea and bacterial meningitis.I have conducted internationally recognized research in the field of Infectious Diseases. My significant contributions have been impacting both the field of Immunoparasitology and Innate Immune research not only on the basis of the actual findings but also through the development of unique tools furthering research in a variety of settings.I have expertise in designing and conducting animal studies. I was the first to develop the P. berghei Anka experimental cerebral malaria model at UMass Medical School. I specifically found new roles for interferon type I receptor in malaria infection, this receptor has been known to be very important for fighting viral infections.I am hard worker and I work well both independently and in a team. I like challenging projects and I never give up!

Modlin showed that nerve injury observed in leprosy patients appears to be a consequence of the innate immune response to M. Ieprae. I investigated biopsies sections and human Schwann cells using an inverted confocal laser scanning microscope. We showed for the first time the ability of lipopeptides to induce apoptosis (cell death) in Schwann cells through TLR2 activation. This action underscores the theory of direct nerve injury induction by Mycobacterium leprae. Thus, the ability to promptly respond to damage by secreting nerve protective molecules could avoid an increase in lesions and further neuronal complications.
