Cayman Islands

Conducted hands-on biological research in the Cayman Islands on the diversity of coral reefs. In lieu of the year-long marine program, I completed my undergraduate thesis via utilizing these long-term biological data combined with my own research. I utilized STELLA modelling software to map out and quantify the relationship between Cayman Islands’ coral reefs and economic well-being simulated over ten years, with connections between ecosystem and economy. These simulations resulted in policy suggestions to optimize both systems without jeopardizing either in the long-run. I believe that proper valuation and quantification of the ecosystem will enable both the private-sector and public-sector in making more environmentally-conscious decisions, and aid in divestment of fossil fuels.

I worked in the investments team on a joint venture fund to increase sustainable China-Africa engagement. There, I learned about client-based work and socially-sustainable investments and engagement between international non-profits, developing countries, and how non-profits like Gates Foundation can impact decisions of governments. I attended weekly conference calls with the Seattle and African Gates Foundation offices, attended meetings with potential investees, and conducted research on sectors such as China’s Beef-Cattle sector.

I managed and oversaw volunteers daily at a 2-week long horseshoe crab exhibition. This experience allowed me the opportunity to take a leadership role in managing an event, where I was responsible for ensuring the exhibit ran smoothly every day, briefing each day’s volunteers on how to navigate the exhibit and engage with participants of this educational exhibit on horseshoe crab conservation.
