Rose High Bear (Deg Hit’an Dine, Inupiaq) is Founding Director of the 501(c)(3) Native American nonprofit, Elderberry Wisdom Farm located in rural Marion County, Oregon. Her two-acre farm is used as a classroom for cohorts of Native American interns pursuing conservation career pathways in the Mid-Willamette Valley of Oregon. Elderberry Wisdom Farm is completing its ninth internship which is providing opportunities for interns to enter conservation fields, including habitat restoration, native plant nursery development and organic farming. Projects include the Native American Climate Adaptation Partnership.Rose was born and raised in the remote subarctic Athabascan village of McGrath on Alaska’s Kuskoquim River. She has eight brothers and sisters still living in Alaska but she came to rural Oregon in 1949 to be raised by her father's side of the family. Following graduation from Oregon State University, she made Portland, OR her home where, in 1993, she co-founded Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. For 27 years, she dedicated herself as its Executive Director and served as Executive Producer of the Native Wisdom Documentary Film Series; Discovering Our Story TV Program; Discovering Our Story Health and Wellness curriculum and Wisdom of the Elders Radio Series. Projects include the TEK Workforce Development Project; the Native Agricultural Biodiversity Accelerator; and the Native American Climate Adaptation Partnership.Elderberry Wisdom Farm has just formed its publishing arm, Elderberry Wisdom Publishing and released the Martin High Bear biography in September 2024. High Bear is the late Lakota medicine man and spiritual leader whose biography is titled "The Seven Commandments of the Sacred Buffalo Calf Woman: Martin High Bear (1919-1995). Rose received a vision in 1988 when she was told she would be writing Martin High Bear's biography and that it would have an impact upon the peoples of the world. To celebrate the release, she completed a series of Wopilas (giveaway ceremonies) at tribal colleges in South Dakota and North Dakota and gifted copies to the High Bear family. His descendants continue to carry on the heritage and cultural values of exemplary family ancestors, including great grandfather Chief Martin Charger and grandfather Samuel Charger.
