Why do we perceive artificial intelligence as conscious? Why do we view these artificial agents as humanlike? What ethical considerations do we need to address in human-AI interaction as a result? Before the dawn of ChatGPT and the emergence of other interactive LLMs and generative AI, I was an undergrad in psychology taking comparative literature and philosophy courses on self-perception and concepts of "personhood" across cultures. In my senior year in 2019, I elected to take an anthropology and religious studies course on transhumanism and artificial intelligence. From reading science fiction novels from "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" to religious manifestos on the singularity and our new AI gods, I began to wonder how the idea of a "person" and a "self" would change in the wake of intelligent, humanlike AI. How might this type of AI change people's perception of their role in society and how they interact with other people? These questions drove me to pursue a joint PhD at Princeton in Psychology and Social Policy to research how and why we perceive mind in AI and the social impacts of doing so. Thus far, I have conducted research on the carry-over effects of ascribing consciousness to AI, the social and mental health impacts of relationships with companion chatbots (and how perceiving the AI as humanlike and conscious plays a role), how individual differences relate to p(doom) attitudes toward AI, and the linguistic and contextual cues people draw upon when evaluating whether an agent has a human or artificial mind. Currently, I am conducting a longitudinal, randomized control study on the impacts of interacting with LLMs on human social health.I aim to inform AI development and regulation through my findings, which is why I am actively seeking involvement in diverse fields during my time at Princeton University. While research is my main goal, I know that in order to collaborate most effectively with academia, government, and industry, a firm understanding of all sectors involved is crucial.Considerations for ethical, human-centered AI is at the core of my research.I am advised by Prof. Michael S. A. Graziano and Prof. Alin Coman. I am grateful to have such amazing mentors at Princeton, and am equally as grateful to all of my other mentors who supported and encouraged me throughout the years.
