About Rosemary Eade

Dr Rosemary Eade - senior research scientist and mathematician. I use my statistical and computer programming skills to analyse big data output from climate models. I enjoy leading science communication and outreach activities. I have lectured at university summer schools on climate change, and have led STEM workshops at schools and colleges to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. I am also an accomplished musician and performer. I have run climate themed song writing workshops and I performed songs on this theme at Glastonbury Festival 2023 in the Science Futures Field. My PhD investigated multi-decadal variability and extreme trends in the North Atlantic Oscillation – a mode of variability that is important for understanding regional climate projections of the future. I have formed strong national and international relationships with other research centres, including collaboration on European climate science projects and a secondment to the Chinese Meteorological Administration through the Climate Science for Service Partnership China. I have published 30 peer reviewed science articles on my research at the UK Met Office.

Senior Scientist

Exeter, United Kingdom

Senior scientist in the Monthly-to-Decadal Variability and Prediction Group at the Met Office. The aim of her research is to improve understanding of modes of climate variability and increase prediction capability. This has led to the completion of a PhD with the University of Exeter, researching "Extreme multi-decadal trends in the North Atlantic Oscillation". Highlights of this senior role have been the formation of strong national and international relationships with other research centres, including collaboration on European projects, and a secondment to the Chinese Meteorological Administration through the Climate Science for Service Partnership China.

Research Scientist

Exeter

Research scientist in the Monthly-to-Decadal Variability and Prediction Group developing methods to assess model skill and climate predictability, with a focus on modes of variability such as the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Contributions to the peer reviewed literature include highlighting an important discrepancy between predictability in the real world compared to that in the model world: Do seasonal to decadal climate predictions underestimate the predictability of the real world?Eade, R., D. M. Smith, A. A. Scaife, E. Wallace, N. Dunstone, L. Hermanson and N. Robinson, Aug 2014, Geophys. Res. Lett., 41, pp. 5620-5628, doi:10.1002/2014GL061146.

Sep 2011 - Aug 2015

Foundation Scientist

Exeter, United Kingdom

Foundation scientist in the Monthly-to-Decadal Variability and Prediction Group with a focus on the prediction of extreme events such as heat waves, extreme rainfall, and North Atlantic Hurricanes. This work led to an important peer reviewed paper demonstrating the capability of Met Office Decadal forecasts to predict changes in such extreme events: Forecasting the number of extreme daily events out to a decade ahead. Eade, R., E. Hamilton, D. M. Smith, R. J. Graham, A. A. Scaife, Nov 2012, J. Geophys. Res., 117, D21110, DOI:10.1029/2012JD018015.
