Ross is a specialist in the application of geomorphology and engineering geology to the quantitative analysis of geohazards. His work is focused on the investigation and analysis of landforms, soils and rocks, and natural processes for clients who make significant investments in developments in potentially hazardous locations. Ross advises such clients regarding the exposure of people and assets to natural hazards through the appropriate understanding of ground conditions.Ross is experienced in regional scale terrain analysis and quantitative geohazard risk assessment for terrestrial linear infrastructure corridors and transport routing in UK, Kenya, Malaysia and UAE and for offshore oil and gas infrastructure in the Eastern Mediterranean, Nile Delta and Caspian Sea. This work is built on his expertise in remote and field based geomorphological mapping and assessment, slope behaviour and condition assessment, ground investigation, ground surveying and monitoring, modelling and prediction, and risk analysis and mitigation. His experience in marine environments also includes quantitative analysis of fault and seismic hazards which impinge on offshore oil and gas infrastructure. Ross is at the leading edge of innovations in 3D subsurface geological and geotechnical modelling using field, borehole and seismic data and has led collaborations with the BGS and the production of numerous internal and published technical papers and conference presentations. Due to the success of these innovations and significant input to the Jacobs Academy (an internal group which cultivates new ideas), Ross was appointed as Jacobs Technical Advisor for Natural Terrain Geohazards and Risk Assessment in 2019 and for Sustainability and the Environment in 2020. His goal is to lead the technical aspects of his discipline and embed sustainability and low-carbon principles into the Tunnels and Ground Engineering Group’s working practices and staff development.
