Some minor repairs could be carried out during the day and ferry schedule however a single pier end fender sustained significant damage that it required removal to affect a repair. The issue was that this 14ton “round head” fender unit in question was a key point of pier structure & vessel protection on the ferry’s approach as well 1 of 4 pivot points used at departure in some wind and tidal conditions. Removal / replacement had to be tied in with low water and calm sea state as the hollow metal structure has some in built buoyancy making removal or installation impossible and hazardous to attempt at anything but low water. To avoid disruption to the summer sailing schedule all on site work was programmed to take place at night. Works were programmed to swap over a lesser used and undamaged round head fender with the principal damaged round head fender over two nights then post off site repair replace the repaired fender unit in to the vacant position, all works tied in with low water and hopefully a calm sea. All works completed to schedule with no requirement to use the pre-programmed continuance allowance.Advance planning of works to fit in with tidal predictions.Planning and Operational H&S including lifting plans Stakeholder liaison – Client – CMAL, Ferry Operations CalMac ( Pier & Operational ), Clyde Port ( Notice to Mariners )Advance subcontractor coordination – Divers, Crane Hire, Road Transport, Repair Workshop.
