My research was to investigate the transport of antibiotic resistant bacteria found in the subsurface drainage tile flow from agricultural lands injected with swine manure. I compared different forms of agricultural tillage to determine if there is a relationship between tillage and bacteria transport through tile drainage. I also tested isolated bacteria.

I was the instructor of the cross-listed graduate course "Design and Evaluation of Soil and Water Conservation" within the Department of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering for one semester. The course emphasized the design phase of various applications in soil and water conservation and how they can be implemented appropriately in midwestern.

I contributed to the development of constructed wetlands optimized to treat the polluted runoff of rice paddy fields near Nanchang, China using conventional cash crops. The wetlands were designed to phytoremediate excess nutrients using lotus plants and other valued crops in Chinese agriculture. I also took classes in Sustainable Urban Water Development.

We collected and processed water samples for multiple water quality monitoring projects in central and northeastern Iowa. We analyzed the samples for a broad range of water quality parameters including emerging contaminants. I also gained experience using DRAINMOD to model drainage tile flow and attempted to modify the it to include water contaminants.

I researched the effectiveness of various configurations of a hydrogen sulfide gas scrubber to treat wastewater biogas from wastewater treatment plant using Tire Derived Rubber Particles (TDRP).
