About Ross Wingfield

Restore is a land management company specialising in large-scale, aspirational nature restoration for landowners across the UK.Managing a current nature restoration portfolio of 72,900 acres, with rapid and accelerating client uptake, Restore specialises in taking landowners on a start-to-finish journey of ambitious, landscape-changing ecological restoration, where the entire service is delivered through one company. As an enthusiastic and passionate countryside manager who enjoys encouraging and developing natural biodiversity and bio-abundance through careful and innovative land management. I have worked as land management adviser for a natural landscape and head ranger for the National Trust the majority of his experience has been in the field getting his boots muddy!Growing up in rural Sussex, I spent most of my time outside in the countryside. After obtaining a degree in Zoology I travelled the world exploring Asia, Africa and Australia, where I worked for Mareeba Wetlands foundation. On returning to the UK I worked for the WWT as an Aviculture Warden in Arundel. From there I began my journey with NT, which took me to several different properties and habitats including 10 years managing the estate at Scotney Castle. From here I moved to work for the High Weald Natural Landscape unit as a Land Management Adviser helping land managers understand their landscape and how to manage it for the benefit of the environment, farming and historic landscape.

    Scotney Castle
In my current position as Scotney Castle’s Area Ranger for the National Trust, I am responsible for the management of the 770 acre estate which comprises tenanted farmland and Grade 1 listed SSSI parkland (500 acres) together with various woodlands (270 acres). Much of the estate is covered by SSSI and a significant amount of the land management is achieved through grazing of Sussex Cattle and sheep.I am passionate about the proactive management of the land, driven by hard scientific observation and best-practice ecological principles - making the right choices for the right environments. I see the nurturing of diversity as lying at the heart of my job. As an experienced estate manager I understand that there is more to great land management than just a passion for wildlife. I am experienced in team management and motivation; relationship building with suppliers, farmers, contractors and local communities; a knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework of land management; budgeting and the delivery of value for money. I have a track record in ecological innovation and am recognised in the National Trust as an expert on woodchip biomass systems and wood fuel supply.
