During the summer of my fourth year as an undergraduate computer scientist, I was accepted by the University of Houston to participate in a National Science Foundation funded summer research program (NSF “Research Experience for Undergraduates” or “REU”). Working under the authority of Dr. Ioannis Pavlidis and Dr. Dvijesh Shastri, and under the patient mentoring of Master’s student Yuichi Fujiki, I developed an innovative computer game which merged very new technologies (iPhone v.3.0, OSX v.10.5) with the often tedious job of monitoring security video footage. The intention of this experiment was to test the hypothesis that an individual's performance (or rate of detecting crimes in security camera footage) could be enhanced by introducing a simple game into their experience.At the end of my time in Houston, I delivered a computer game that functioned as a super-imposed layer over top of pre-recorded video footage. Specifically, I developed this game for the Mac OS 10.5 operating system, in the Objective-C programming language. Furthermore, I leveraged the unique characteristics of the iPhone to create a hand-held wireless game controller, using a simple TCP/IP socket connection over WIFI. My work on this project was furthered by a number of individuals, who shuttled the software to experimentation in a controlled environment.
