About Ross Anderson
My driving purpose in education is to cultivate the creative mindsets and skills of diverse educators—and the students they nurture—in order to build a more vibrant and equitable educational system for future generations. To that end, I lead the research and development of makeSPACE, a cutting edge professional development system and community of practice for K-12 educators and school leaders. The makeSPACE model enhances the creative strengths of educators and prepares them to integrate research-based artistic and creative practices into curriculum and instruction across content areas and grade levels. We have designed and built makeSPACE to be a flexible system of self-guided online courses, live institutes and workshops, grab-and-go instructional routines and solutions, and an interactive community of practice where innovative educators can exchange and crowdsource ideas and feedback together. To date, our research has found that educators across content areas, grade levels, rural and urban locales, and a diversity of backgrounds find the makeSPACE experience to be transformative in their approach to teaching. During the 2020–2021 school year of distance learning, we were both surprised and intrigued to discover that makeSPACE contributed to an increase in teacher joy, resilience, empathy, and creative agency and a decrease in teacher stress. I bring 15 years of leadership in educational design, research, and strategy to my work. My approach builds from my PhD training at the University of Oregon, my development as a designer at Yale University, and the numerous collaborations with scholars and educators from across the world that have expanded my thinking.
