Ross (Rusty) Segan, MD, MBA, FACS is a recognized MedTech thought leader and accomplished physician executive with over 25 years contributing progressive health care solutions of broader benefit to patients and global health. Known for driving powerful synergy between medicine, science, business, and technology, Dr. Segan has helped deliver standard of care elevating innovation to address important unmet medical needs across over 20 clinical specialties around the globe while upholding the highest standards of patient safety and ethics. He is a passionate, visionary patient advocate and an authentic, relatable servant leader who naturally forms deep, trusted relationships, enabling broad multi-disciplinary collaboration and positive impact for public health.He currently serves as the Director of the Office of Product Evaluation and Quality (OPEQ) at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), where he is responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation, management, and direction of the Center’s broad national and international premarket, postmarket, and compliance programs.Prior to joining FDA, Dr. Segan was founder and Managing Director of Medical Scientific Advisors, LLC, a firm providing senior advisory services to companies the MedTech and Life Sciences industries. Previously, he was an executive leader across numerous roles at Olympus, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices and Covidien. In addition to functional leadership roles of clinical research, medical affairs, pre-clinical research, health economics and market access, professional medical education, medical safety, regulatory affairs, and R&D.Dr. Segan served in the United States Army Medical Corp as Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Acting Associate Program Director, General Surgery Residency at Tripler Army Medical Center. Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for wartime service during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2006, Dr. Segan performed the first laparoscopic surgery in Afghanistan and helped support the early establishment of a training program for multinational surgeons in Kabul. He was medically retired as a result of injuries sustained during a combat medevac mission.Dr. Segan has written several peer reviewed journal articles as well as presented at numerous scientific symposia around the globe.
