hearth.earth is an online, freelance GIS + Design platform started in 2017. Projects are typically focused in the New River & Roanoke Valleys of Blue Ridge VA as well as the Southwest VA in the Heart of Appalachia.

Our expanding population creates an ever-increasing need for natural resources to supply food, fiber, energy, recreation, clean water and air, and other products and amenities. Competition for increasingly scarce resources creates challenges for those who attempt to supply natural resource-based goods and services in an efficient and environmentally responsible manner.Finding solutions to these challenges requires complex and data-intensive assessment and projection of resource availability, conditions, locations, and trends. Advanced analytical tools and extensive resource data are needed to ensure that decisions are based on sound science, adequate information, and careful consideration of alternatives.At CeNRADS we focused on locating forested land that is persisting versus land lost permanently to development. With an increased need for agricultural land with the necessity for forested land and biomass for carbon sequestration, it is important to understand how our forests are growing and being managed. We partnered with biomass industries from paper mills to lumber companies to logging companies to generate forest models estimating what is available to harvest and the land owner's willingness to harvest. We also partnered with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative to better understand if the implementation of said initiative has increased sustainable forestry acts over the last few decades.

The Office of Sustainability works to educate the Virginia Tech community about how to live a more sustainable and low-impact lifestyle through behavior change and an understanding of the impacts one’s personal actions can have on a global scale. The office works with the understanding that even the smallest behavior changes can create a more sustainable world.

Flood Modeling in La Libertad, Peru using CREST 2.0. We combined topographic/watershed data, mean precipitation data and evapotranspiration data using remote sensing satellites to produce this model. The model was given to the non-profit organization "Water for People" to improve productivity for local farmers in the region.

Work on sustainable development of our world through the triple-bottom-line framework to evaluate company performance. Use of the life cycle analysis to engage a cradle-to-cradle design for efficient product end use. Understanding of the leadership strategies within organizations to maximize operations and minimize global footprint for lasting consumer satisfaction.
