Strategic Programs Director

Melbourne, Australia

Following three years leading Creativity Australia I moved into a part-time role overseeing the business model and digital transformation to grow and expand the organisation and provide direction to our main social inclusion program, With One Voice. • Strategic Product Owner: Designed transformation roadmap and customised MS Dynamics environment to integrate all business functions and achieve significant automation • Project manager: Established and led cross-disciplinary teams to implement transformation roadmap including IT infrastructure, process documentation, e-learning and induction programs. At the end of the nearly 8 years with Creativity Australia, I am very honoured to have initiated, led and successfully implemented a new strategy and business model transformation to take the organisation from traditional charity to social franchise. Without increasing the organisational cost-base, when I left, the organisation had: • doubled the number of programs being delivered (11 to 24 and still growing),• tripled the beneficiaries (~400 to 1300 and still growing), and • increased the net cash position by ~40%.

Together, we change the world… one voice at a time.Over three years I led the organisation to develop a model to scale the successful With One Voice program; developed Sing for Good as a new peer-to-peer and crowd-funding platform; initiated and managed a end-to-end systems upgrade that bought together multiple disparate systems into one, defined and built the key metrics, reporting, introduced online membership payment and significant automation; strengthened Board reporting and governance, including dramatically improving our financial audit results; worked with multiple major Trusts & Foundations to secure funding for critical projects; and oversaw the transition of control of the organisation to a new CEO.

The Incuvator was a new innovation incubator model aimed at assisting manufacturers innovate through design thinking and connecting them ideas of young people in their second and third year of design, commerce and marketing degrees. Unfortunately we couldn't get the Incuvator off the ground, but it proved to be a significant training ground for the trials and tribulations of a start-up and providing key learnings to develop the business models, systems and processes required to scale. It also gave me very interesting insight into working in the very competitive and traditional sectors of manufacturing and university education.

The core business of Build21c is the provision of specialised project planning services. Its guiding philosophy is that ‘successful projects = successful business’, and it works with teams to ensure their projects are effectively planned and managed so they have the greatest chance of success. Build21c has developed an innovative and rigorous set of processes for each specific stage of a project and delivers them to project teams through interactive workshops. Used individually or bundled together, the "Project Workshop Series" creates a successful project culture and business success. Build21c also provides research services to complement the projects your business is undertaking. It ensures you have the best insight and intelligence for project success. As part of our research we can make recommendations on strategy, government policy, and business, industry or market development. We have specific expertise in the building industry, public policy, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), climate change and sustainability.Build21c was started in 2009 based on my vision that engineers would solve many of the challenges facing the world today, but that management of these technical skills required new thinking. These ideas have been evolving since I first encountered them during my Masters of Project Management, and I have combined them with personal experiences managing industry and academic research to create the “Project Workshop Series". I call it ‘the other way to plan projects’: rather than identifying the tasks required to deliver the outcome, assigning them resources and setting deadlines, I use external influences to increase resources and maximise time. This overcomes the 'siloed organisation' by getting all team members to understand not only how their work can be impacted by external influences, but how they can actively use those influences to improve their outcomes.

Sep 2005 - Dec 2007

Graduate

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

As part of the graduate program, I had the opportunity to learn about defence policy and most importantly, systems and processes. After the 12 month graduate program, I worked in DMO for nearly two years on the workforce planning team. As part of this team I was introduced to the challenges of project management within the military environment, the nuances of workforce management, and most significantly, systems thinking and process mapping.
