Data Engineer
Is Manager
In December 2015 I successfully interviewed for the position of IS Manager. I manage and mentor 5-line reports which includes a small development team for in-house software services. Principally using an agile methodology, software is developed in a combination of suitable technology stacks against a Microsoft SQL Server backend.I have responsibility for all aspects of IT including all servers, infrastructure and security and I am in a key position for the vision set out by the governing board to bring WANO's IT systems up to a modern standard. This project is well defined in the London office and we are showing ourselves to be a beacon of good practice to the other regional centres around the world. Every year I chair the WANO Information Systems Group where we discuss all matters regarding Information Systems and how it is implemented in each office. I also give presentations at Cyber Security workshops discussing this issue with IT professionals within the Nuclear industry.
Systems Administrator
My role at WANO is Systems Administrator for the London Office. This includes all aspects of running IT in the office including an estate of Windows 2008R2 Servers running AD, DNS, DHCP, ADFS(2.0), Exchange(2010), LYNC(2010), Networks, Avaya Phone System, VMware and Windows 7 with Office 2010. My initial remit was to bring the London office IT standards up to modern times. This meant moving away from a single SBS2011 server to now nearly 30 VM's and providing the best IT systems and infrastructure to facilitate the goals and visions of WANO. This also included an office move, a complete refresh of network and server hardware and moving away from XP to Windows 7 for the desktops all completed on time with no downtime.
Snr Systems Administrator (Networks And Security)
IDOX Plc is a provider of software to local government. My current role started after Caps Solutions and IDOX plc had finished successfully merging. At which point a flatter management structure was introduced and my line responsibility was transferred, but I continued to apply my mentoring abilities. My main responsibly is to govern and manage the company’s network, firewall and VPN systems. In the last 3 years the company has acquired several other companies who needed to be integrated into the existing systems. We now have a unified email system and are currently migrating all of our physical server room infrastructure into a single Blade Centre/SAN and virtualising them using VMWare vSphere. We are utilising a tier 4 data centre using VPLS to connect the remote sites together and Cisco ASA to provide firewall and VPN capability. We also implement Cisco from Core to Edge in offices. As part of a growing demand for all things cloud based and SAAS, I helped develop a hosting platform and framework for hosting IDOX software to customers, including MS Sql and Oracle Databases. This was delivered to customers using dedicated lines, Site to Site VPN or just Citrix over the web and in some cases a mixture of the 3 for backup and redundancy. This also involved creating more capacity in the datacentre and the use of Cisco UCS technology. I was instrumental in several key projects, getting them back on track after they had stalled at the various technology hurdles and would visit customers and talk them through the solution face to face, often meeting with my counterpart to assuage any fears or doubt about the project and the technology we were using to deliver the product.
(Volunteer) Tech Team Manager/Systems Admin (Firewall And Servers)
Multiplay, the largest multiplayer LAN gaming companies in the UK, managing a technical and network support team for LAN events. This involves setting up a 1100 seat, high quality Ethernet network in approximately 14 hours and running it for 3 to 4 days before collapsing it again. My primary role was to provide a quality service. The Core Network or Services are critical to these events taking place and that is where my primary responsibilities lie. I often worked well into the early hours to provide solutions within a unique environment where every user is a power user.I was also responsible for all the gaming servers, 30 in use at present, rebuilding them in terms of both hardware and software when necessary. I also install, setup and manage the Core Services at the events which includes DNS, DHCP and Firewall Servers.
Internal Technical Consultant/Lead Internal Technical Consultant
Caps Solutions provided software for local government running Uniface on an Oracle database backend. This also included a host of web based products which looked to the same Oracle database.I joined Caps Solutions as part of a newly formed Internal Technical Consultant team. My principal role was to support the External Technical Consultants who were at customer sites installing our suite of software. I also deployed the same suite of software to internal users, such as pre sales. This included upgrading company software and Oracle Databases. I was also responsible for remote dial in work to customer sites installing our training database and running product upgrades. During this time I showed skill and dedication and as the department expanded a new role was made to lead the team. I was successful in my application for this role and took on the responsibility for leading 7 people. 4 of whom went on to become successful external consultants. In July 2007 Caps Solutions was acquired by IDOX Plc.
Systems Administrator
Working as a Network/System Administrator alongside three Support Officers, providing 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support for 1200 Students and 300 Staff. Running a hybrid environment of RedHat Linux and windows servers. I am involved in the day to day operation of all aspects of the IT infrastructure, talking to people, dealing with problems and providing solutions. In March 2003 the IT Manager left and I took over the majority of his role. Since then, I have dealt with most server problems and projects. My responsibilities as Network/System Administrator include system updates, user quotas, email filtering, web filtering, maintaining block lists, rotating backup tapes, maintaining server/network security. I also spend some time on the helpdesk to make sure it is running smoothly.I have been involved in a European wide project to enable schools and libraries to become Multimedia centres with specialist equipment such as DV Editing Suites. This involved talking to people from five different countries and creating a common usable platform. In 2003 I managed a 70K project to install and roll out wireless links from St. Vincent College to our outreach centres across Gosport as part of a government scheme called “UKOnline”. The project ran to budget and successfully completed on time.
Field Service Engineer / Peripheral Technician
I was employed by Logistics International, a company that provides a technical support service to the retail industry, to work on their Siemens Nixdorf Contract for the south coast. This included organising site visits, consultancy and ordering parts. I repaired and installed EPoS Systems, back office hardware and PC’s. Within this role I dealt with many levels of management within the customers’ company and by using tact & diplomacy often solved difficult situations.
Technical Support - Sales
My job with M2 was providing technical support and consultancy for the corporate side of the company: MX2. The main part of my job was on site visits, consisting of anything from adding computers to existing networks to setting up entire networks within office environments. An essential part of the job was to evaluate the customer’s needs and provide solutions to their problems, then communicate this information back to the salesperson so that a full in depth quote could be supplied. The capability to talk to differing levels of technical ability was very important. In addition I built and tested specialist machines for demonstration and evaluation. I also trained other technicians as both build engineers and Technical Support.
Systems Integrator
I joined Tri-Map International as a Trainee Systems Integrator and was offered a permanent position within three months. I was trained in the full procedure of building computers from a part level and integrating them into Rack Mount Industrial chassis. I also provided Technical support for both customers and the Sales Team.
