Volunteer position seeking to improve geographic data availability in Hawaii, promote our industry, and mentor the next generation of geospatial professionals!

Identify opportunities, develop, and manage partnerships that have led to $4.654 million dollars in geospatial data collection projects. These multiple year, cross-sector projects are bringing first-of-its-kind topobathymetic elevation data (LIDAR) to 11 US Pacific Islands. Provide high-level technical assistance and administrative direction to NOAA’s internal and external partners. Direction encompasses Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, UAS, GPS/GNSS, geodesy, enterprise and cloud technologies, and geospatial data science workflows.Oversee a diverse portfolio of Pacific-region environmental restoration projects and partnerships; everything from identifying and mapping coastal habitats with The Nature Conservancy to monitoring land-based sources of pollution with US Geological Survey.Serve as the Pacific Regional Liaison for the NOAA Digital Coast Partnership, a cross-sector partnership focused on increasing adoption of technology for coastal zone management and hazard mitigation. Attend regional stakeholder events and meetings to understand our stakeholder's needs, represent the Digital Coast, and foster collaboration on geospatial technology.

Wrote technical statements of work, managed geospatial contracts, and performed quality control/quality assurance for geospatial deliverables. Detailed expertise in LIDAR, satellite and aerial imagery, land cover and land use (LC/LU), and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).Represented and evangelized NOAA Digital Coast’s data, tools, and trainings within NOAA’s Pacific Region. Presented at conferences, listened to feedback, trained our users, and provided an extremely high-level of technical assistance. Organized, attended, and led geospatial and geodetic learning activities at regional K-12 educational and outreach events. Promoted STEM education, the earth sciences, and environmental stewardship.

Helped process, document, and manage the trillions of LIDAR points, millions of square miles of land cover data, and two decades of aerial imagery archives available for download on NOAA Digital Coast.Used a wide variety of geospatial analysis tools. Write automated methods in Python, bash, or other scripting tools to generate US County-scale digital elevation models (DEMs), shoreline and hydrographic data sets, and canopy height models (CHMs).Provided customer support and technical assistance to users of NOAA Digital Coast Data Access Viewer. Investigated technical issues, opened JIRA tickets, and helped Digital Coast’s developers find and squash bugs!

As the Hawai‘i Regional Director for ASPRS’s Pacific Southwest Region I was responsible for promoting the organization at regional events, recruiting and supporting members, and build community.

Transitioned from GIS Intern to independent GIS Consultant on 8/10/2010.Interviewed, hired, and supervised two cohorts of an expanded annual GIS internship program of two GIS Interns from the University of South Carolina. Identified opportunities for improving geodetic products; expanded the Enterprise Geographic Information System’s capabilities to predict which sections of stormwater infrastructure may fail based on variables such as age, material type, and exposure to salt water. These predictive capabilities greatly increased the amount of preventive maintenance conducted from 2010 to 2012.Provided administrative direction related to contracting and acquisition of geodetic services and products from private contractors. These projects include GPS-enabled road pavement inspections, a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) collection, and high-resolution aerial imagery acquisitions to support relocation of Captain Sams Inlet.

Responsible for digitization and conversion of legacy Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), hardcopy survey plats, hardcopy maps, and engineering reports into an ArcGIS Enterprise Geographic Information System for use by maintenance department.Inspected over 200 individual segments of stormwater infrastructure, entering information into handheld Trimble Juno GPS/Data Collector. All inspections were reviewed in the office and integrated into the Enterprise GIS for analysis, management, and visualization.Prepared technical reports, spreadsheets, maps, and various visual aids to help the Chief Engineer brief Seabrook Island’s residents on improvements and repairs to public infrastructure.
