Project Coordinator, Student Engagement Advisor
Aided a citizen-led, pro-bono volunteer group of industry professionals helping to fulfill the City of Asheville and Buncombe County's 100% Renewable Energy goals by 2030. Since January 2020, the group has been creating plans and advocating for implementing integrated clean energy microgrids for assuring critical public services and accelerating ambitious community goals for energy efficiency and renewable energy.- Led the completion of a collaborative effort between UNCA and Warren Wilson College to restore and upgrade one 2008 golf cart, yielding a better-than-new transportation solution for under $2,500. After extensive analysis and research on parts, LiFePO4 batteries, a new solenoid, solar charging (panel and controller), and USB outputs were added. Future efforts will include guiding small groups of students to restore and upgrade their own carts among the remainder of the fleet. Other upgrades are expected, such as location tracking, utilization diagnostics, and AC inverters for mobile classroom applications. Integration into renewable energy resources on campus is also expected.- Used HOMER Pro to teach & present microgrid applications to students. This software enabled us to approximate energy and cost savings of microgrids, supporting the efforts to get plans approved as well as equipping local students with tools needed for positions in this industry.- A Level 1 ASHRAE Energy Audit was performed on the Asheville Fire and Police station to better estimate the electrical loads of the facility for modeling purposes.- Attending weekly meetings to communicate with all group members, as well as guest industry leaders interested in assisting our efforts.
Electrical Designer - Renewable Energy
Assisted clients from backgrounds including municipal, commercial & industrial, and utility to deliver solutions advancing their goals in renewable energy.- Used solar photovoltaic (PV) design tools such as Helioscope, EnergyToolBase, and SolarEdge Designer to create and model PV systems. Contributed to construction drawing sets in AutoCAD alongside other electrical engineers. These drawing sets included single line diagrams, site layouts, PV string layouts, equipment spec sheets, and panel schedules.- Used the National Electric Codes to size conductors, conduits, circuit breakers, and equipment grounding & grounding electrode conductors. Consulted Article 690 for PV requirements.- Created multiple construction drawing sets for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for Duke's EV Park & Plug program. Collaborated weekly with Duke Engineers and Project Managers. Attended several site visits to develop solutions with clients.- Analyzed client electric bills and equipment to estimate cost savings after PV and electrification of gas-powered equipment.- Performed compliance checks of lighting loads per the International Energy Conservation Code.- Represented McKim & Creed at the Appalachian State 2023 Energy Conference.
Electrical Engineer
- Day-to-day activities include drafting electrical layouts for devices and cables in AutoCAD, updating spreadsheets with device addresses, controls, & estimated cable lengths, utilizing SAP for part orders & deliveries to site, and collaborating with team members both in the office and remotely on-site. Activities also include evaluating and creating standardizations of best practices for documentation and design.- Assigned Project Engineer for a new system in Mobile, Al. Responsibilities include delivering all parts using SAP, inspecting all layouts & spreadsheets made by multiple engineers, and tracking & reporting on all progress of install.- 24 & 480 Volt power distribution and control panel inspections, assembled by contractors. Wire pull tests, continuity checks, accuracy to schematics, and power-on tests measuring device outputs.- Travel to sites in Winston-Salem, Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Birmingham for leading & troubleshooting system electrical installations and standby for PLC IO checks. Using aforementioned layouts to instruct contractors (often with a language barrier) where to install devices and cables. Common devices include Allen-Bradley ArmorStarts and IO Link Masters.- AutoCAD skills used include layer control, dimensioning and scaling, sheet sets, blocks, xrefs, line weights, plot files, etc.
