Titel: "Materiality Analyses as an Instrument for Sustainability Strategy Development? An Investigation From a Consultancy Perspective"Grading: 1,3Abstract: Materiality analysis (MA) is a widely used practice in sustainability management to co-determine the content of corporate sustainability reports and strategies by engaging with stakeholders. Although sustainability reporting is often the subject of research to examine stakeholder engagement (SE), it only tells half the story and the underlying decision making remain s largely in the dark. Hence, this study aimed to examine the internal processes of strategy development based on MA through in depth interviews with sustainability consultants (N = 10). Specifically, the focus was on evaluating the effectiveness of MA in reflecting stakeholder interests by analyzing the flow of stakeholder input through the company In the context of climate change and many other societal problems, companies have a great responsibility to reduce their negative impacts and make a positive contribution, which increases the relevance of the research topic. Stakeholder theory and its related approach of SE, which form the theoretical basis of this thesis, claim to offer promising solutions. The findings confirm criticism of value laden determination in favour with influential stakeholders and further concerns such as the potential paternalistic nature of MA per se are identified. However, the study also proposes arguments supporting the idea of MA as a mouthpiece for stakeholders. It is concluded that the concept needs further co-development with stakeholders and that knowledge from long standing research streams such as civic participation and social change may hold the key to resolving its issues.
