Student Research Assistant

2115 Summit Ave. St. Paul, Mn 55122

The summer of 2016, I was hired as research student for the Engineering Department at the University of St. Thomas. During this brief experience, a colleague and I built a vertical soap tunnel to examine behaviors of wake interaction. One wake was used as a control and then a second was added. It was found that by adding a second wake there is a change to the original wake. Also, the two wakes respond to changes in the environment together. Further experiments are needed to better understand these behaviors. Tasks:• Conducted investigation and research in the pursuit of a thorough understanding of the theory behind a vertical soap film apparatus and vortex behaviors in fluid • Developed innovative concepts for the apparatus and prepared a bill of material • Modeled, built and developed tests to validate the design

Summer Research Student

Excel Research Scholars

University Of St. Thomas

In the summer of 2015, I was admitted to the Excel! Research Scholars Program and was mentored by Dr. Katherine Acton, from the Department of Engineering at the University of St. Thomas. I wanted to study ways of improving efficiency in beam designs. My mentor worked with me on the following research question: how can the building industry optimize material usage in beam production while reducing its energy consumption? To respond to the question, I conducted a literature review on sustainable development, green engineering, I-beams, and honeycomb structures. After reviewed several articles and text I formulated the following thesis: the building industry could optimize material usage in beam production with the use of honeycomb structures. Honeycomb’s characteristics give it the advantage of low density. Therefore, embedding honeycomb structures into the web area of the I-beam in this study could not only aid in minimizing the wastefulness of natural resource, but also improve I-beams’ moment of inertia and bending stiffness. I designed beams with honeycomb structures through the use of a modeling and finite element analysis package, SOLIDWORKS. I investigated the design using FEA before conducting experimental testing. The results of this investigation showed that beam models with vertical cell orientation have lower deflection values under a given load than beams in the horizontal orientation.
