Thanks to my work at INTERPOL, I have become acutely aware of the necessity of bringing the world together in fighting cybercrime and promoting cybersecurity for our globalized society. I like to help develop the related thought processes and facilitate this complicated challenge, for instance by highlighting examples of successful collaborations. I've grouped this stream of not-for-profit activities under CyberNear.org, as in cyberspace we are all technically neighbours. Please feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss.My preceding, more entrepreneurial, internet improvement initiatives include: disrupting the monopolized market of proto-internet hosting software (late 1980s); creating the first direct-access internet provider: Internet Direkt (1990s); and developing an AI radio station that applies music psychology to adopt the user's taste: RadioBot (Clicklab, 2000s).In the 2010s, I've been blessed to personally deliver urgent content related to topics I feel passionate about. I've catered to vastly different target audiences: in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, on stage or using a pen - or a microphone, as there's still a dj inside me. ;)

Together with a wonderful crew we've delivered on nation-wide innovations in the field of cybercrime:- Implementing alternative law enforcement solutions to complement and improve criminal investigations- Moving to a fully data-driven approach, from helping local victims to catching global kingpins- Facilitating a multi-pronged governance structure, enabling all units to smoothly move forward together- Attracting the right staff right now, as well as improving digital (leadership) skills throughout the forceThe role included supporting international collaboration against cybercrime, further developing national cyber-crisis readiness, improving cyber (threat) intelligence and supporting the influx of 'cyber volunteers' originating from the general public.

Part of a small but plucky CISO team overseeing the overall information security of our country's largest employer, on behalf of Police High Command (de Nationale Korpsleiding) and our CIO.My focus was on cybersecurity, national policy frameworks, comprehensive crisis management, strategic threat intel, prevention (awareness) and verification (redteaming).In 2021, I chaired the National Cyber Crisis Exercise ISIDOOR for the police, supported by a great team.

A proud part of these pioneering digital sheriffs and deputies cleaning up the new wild west together with cowboys wearing white hats.Strategizing and educating on threats and internet-centred crimes, participating in high-tech crime investigations, recruiting specialists, and forging public-private partnerships to combat cybercrime.The work included aligning strategy and output to government policies, maintaining close relations with cyber security leaders of the vital infrastructure, managing press, and facilitating expansion.Operationally, I took part in a number of criminal intelligence and cybercrime investigations, coordinated national recruitment campaigns and implemented our active crime-fighting PR strategy.In this same role, I was a selected member of five C-level national cyber security ISACs: for the vital sectors of telecommunications/isp, msp, health, insurance, as well as the top-20 multinationals of the Netherlands.In 2015, the National Crime Squad seconded me to INTERPOL for 2.5 years.In 2018, I obtained the rank of Hoofdinspecteur, similar to Detective Superintendent.

Designing and implementing sociotechnical strategies for improved interaction with citizens.Initially a member of the disruptive 'Juxta' think tank, to shed new light on the police force, I advised on ways to improve the overall innovation culture and suggested a range of directions for combating crime.Following up on this, together with a hands-on, imaginative team I connected the police to social media, refined a system to provide instant case updates to civilians, and implemented controlled crowdsourced pursuit through Burgernet.As Burgernet manager (2009-2012) I implemented this action network between local governments, national boards, police, private contributors and civilians. This involved a broad media campaign and mass-acquisition solution, reaching the goal of having 1 in 25 citizens participate within a year.

Building strategies, partnerships and global operations against high-tech threats and cybercrime, working within perhaps the most international context imaginable with amazingly motivated colleagues and partners from all across the world.A significant portion of the work involved aligning cyber activities to INTERPOL's strategic and legal frameworks, and vice versa. This included international law and cross-sector relation management.Operational successes include: the world-wide simultaneous takedown of the SIMDA botnet, halting criminals on global Airline Action Days, and developing threat intelligence for >190 countries.Recurring cyber threats to address were criminal APTs, cryptoware and business e-mail compromise.August 2016 - July 2017: Strategy & Outreach (strategic alignment)April 2015 - July 2016: Cyber Fusion Centre (intelligence development)
