Hi, I'm Rowan! A little about me: I've always been driven by a deep curiosity and desire to challenge the status quo, which has led me to a unique academic journey at Duke University with my self-designed major, "Epilepsy: Investigating the Paradoxes of Mind, Identity and Existence". This program centers around a core question: How does Epilepsy shape human experience, challenge philosophy, and influence perspectives on existence, meaning, and religion? This unique and thrilling opportunity enables me to explore the overlooked aspects of Epilepsy, enhancing my academic knowledge and understanding of its significant impact on individuals and society. In my role as the Founder/CEO of Epilepsy International, I lead a global nonprofit with 1,000 volunteers and 40 chapters spanning over 25 countries. Our mission is to both raise awareness about Epilepsy and advocate for those affected by it. Through this role, I've been fortunate to collaborate with esteemed organizations such as the Pan-African Parliament, the African UN, the International League Against Epilepsy, the International Bureau for Epilepsy, and Health Ministers across continental Africa. Together, we are igniting innovation, increasing awareness, and driving positive change in the field of Epilepsy. My research passion is a relentless pursuit to unravel the neuro mechanisms of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy), fueled by the prospect of life-saving interventions. Additionally, my deep commitment extends to clinical research focused on Epilepsy outcomes in resource-poor regions. Insights gained through collaboration with Epilepsy International inspire my dedication to enhancing care and outcomes in underserved communities.Beyond academia and advocacy, I'm a firm believer in harnessing athletics to inspire and demonstrate that Epilepsy cannot hinder our pursuit of greatness – it can only enhance it. Over the years, I've achieved remarkable milestones in the world of sports, setting a World Record, completing an Ironman Triathlon, and representing Team USA in the Duathlon World Championships. These accomplishments send a powerful message to others living with Epilepsy: with determination, resilience, and proper management, individuals with Epilepsy can conquer any athletic endeavor they set their sights on.Inspired by Nelson Mandela's words, "It always seems impossible until it's done," I'm committed to creating a world where Epilepsy isn't a barrier but a catalyst for resilience and achievement.
