Profile bio

About Rowan Emerson

Sustainability has long been very alluring to me both because of its immense importance on all aspects of the triple bottom line, but also because it requires imaginative and effective thinking that need to go beyond surface level. I have been dedicated to pushing myself and my community to be more sustainability minded, applying skills of persuasion and leadership to guide groups of people into a more holistic understanding of what sustainability, zero-waste, and the triple bottom line are, and why they are critically important. This field has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally as I hone my abilities and cultivate my interests. Through my time at the College of Charleston I worked to gain as much experience in different areas of sustainability. I worked for the Medical University of South Carolina's Sustainability and Recycling Department as well in order to understand more fully what sustainable program looks like on a campus level. Currently I am working for the Center of Sustainable Development at the College, where I am addressing issues of waste management and other aspects of sustainability on the campus. I work with faculty, staff, and the student body to create imaginative and effective ways to cut down on our over all waste, including creating resources and guides that help lead people to educate themselves on these issues. After graduation I would love to pursue a career in a company or organization that works to expand public knowledge on sustainability, and works to tackle the problem of climate change, and the plethora of social and environmental injustices that accompany it. I would also love to continue to be a climate activist after graduation, as I have immensely enjoyed both organizing and participating in public activism during my time at CofC.
