Profile bio

About Randall L. Owen, Ms, Mphil, Mbe, Pa-C

I am a certified physician associate (PA-C) licensed in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Minnesota to practice medicine under the supervision of a board-certified physician (MD or DO). My scope of practice includes the full range of clinical practice such as taking histories, performing physical exams, ordering labs and diagnostic procedures, diagnosing illnesses, formulating treatment plans, ordering follow-up tests, and prescribing medications. I am qualified to first-assist in a range of minor and major surgical procedures.I am also a Research Affiliate with the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the Yale School of Medicine, where I am completing my Ph.D. dissertation research in medical imaging with Professor Larry Staib. My work applies deep learning algorithms to the classification of medical images, with a focus on EEG and fMRI studies of patients with disorders of consciousness. Starting with the development of a mathematical model based on group theory to model the symmetries that are inherent in these images, a deep learning system is being developed which should be minimal in terms of architectural complexity while retaining the ability to classify and/or segment the images in the presence of a range of confounding symmetries. This work is intended to provide some new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of these patients..

Listed skills include Leadership, It Strategy, Team Building, Clinical Trials, and 34 others.

My research is related to the moral and ethical issues related to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to clinical medicine and medical research. I am particularly interested in applications of artificial intelligence to diagnosis and treatment in the clinical setting and the corresponding ethical issues that arise as clinicians become more inter-dependent with AI technology in the delivery of patient care. These ethical issues will need to be clarified and addressed as the clinical capabilities of the technology become increasingly autonomous while simultaneously less transparent.
